American auto manufacturer Ford Motor is resurrecting its iconic Mach 1 in a new branding exercise as Mustang Mach 1.
The return of Mach 1 pony car as limited edition after a 17-year gap as the all-new Mustang Mach 1 fastback coupe will have a high profile launch early next year.
Jim Farley, Ford’s chief operating officer explained the bold styling, great acceleration, and speed that will endear Mach 1 to the buyers. The limited-edition Mach 1 will have Mustang GT’s 5.0-liter V8 engine with a pull of 480 horsepower.
The original 250 horsepower Mach 1 was introduced in 1969. The new car will fill the gap between the standard Mustang and Shelby Mustangs.
The name Mach 1 signifies the speed at supersonic rates and stands for the technical term for sound’s speed. However, Ford is yet to specify the speed for the Mach 1.
The highlights of Mach 1 include a design for track driving, better oil cooling, and large air intakes. An optional package for the suspension will provide better high-speed handling. It is reported that some engine parts from the Shelby Mustangs will be used on this car.
Buyers will have the option to choose either a six-speed manual transmission or a 10-speed automatic, per CNN. The price tag is unknown but dealerships are expected to sell the new Mach 1 in the spring of 2021, according to Ford.
According to industry watchers, the all-new Mustang Mach 1 will be the most track-capable 5.0-liter Mustang ever, thanks to innovations like the new front end, plus many performance parts from Mustang Shelby GT350 and Shelby GT500 models.
The Ford Mustang was successfully introduced in April 1964 as a sporty pony car to attract younger buyers. A few years later Ford rolled out performance Mustangs to compete with GM, Chevrolet Camaro, and Pontiac Firebird. First-generation Mach 1’s are distinguished by the body style code 63C on the door data plate.
New launches from Ford
Meanwhile, Ford Motor will roll four new vehicles in the next 10-12 months. They include the 2021 F-150 pickup, Mustang Mach-E electric SUV, Bronco and Bronco Sport SUVs. The F-series has been America’s best-selling vehicle.
The launches of Ford Explorer and Lincoln Aviator in 2019 got off to a rocky start. Explorer has recorded stronger sales in the first months of 2020 than competitor Toyota Highlander.
The F-150 is an all-new truck. The Mach-E is inherently easier to build because electric vehicles have fewer parts than traditional ones. The Bronco uses the same platform as the Ranger midsize pickup and Bronco Sport will have the same process as the Escape and Corsair.
